Our 1969 Dodge Six Pack Super Bee won top honors in the Muscle Car Class. Vic Sr.’s original 1932 Ford dry lakes Roadster won 3rd in the Hot Rod Legends category. Also entered in the “Shelby Mustangs” class was Christi Edelbrock’s 1966 Shelby 350 race car. The Edelbrock West Coast Display Trailer was on hand with all the latest in performance on display. Vic and Christi were also on hand to sign hats and posters for fans and spectators. The day was made even better by great Southern California weather. A fun day was had by all.

First we stopped off at the ROUSH Headquarters for a tour. It was really nice to see the collection  of vehicles housed there. On our tour, it was interesting to note what the ROUSH team was working on. Besides their usual automotive projects, this time they were rebuilding engines for a vintage P51 Mustang aircraft. They had completely overhauled the engine and were in the re-assembly phase when we were there.

Our second stop brought us back to the Henry Ford Museum and Proving Grounds in Dearborn Michigan. This place was so big we couldn’t see and experience it all the first time at the end of the 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour. This time we were treated to areas we didn’t experience on our first visit. We got to see more of the industrial equipment on display  as well as a few more historic vehicles.

We were also treated to a tour of Ford’s Dearborn Development Center, formerly Dearborn Proving Ground, which in turn was the former Ford Airport. We toured the site with a professional driver and then were taken on a one on one for a performance spin in Fords NEW BOSS 302 Mustang. It was a really great experience. Thanks to all who made the visit possible.

The Race at Road America was a great time! We really enjoyed running the cars here again. Great people, beautiful surroundings and a great track made for a wonderful weekend. One of our vintage cars, the #16 George Follmer Trans-Am Boss Mustang was a class winner in the Road & Track Concourse. The event was very well attended and the Edelbrock cars were a big hit. The 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour Was a great success.  If you are not familiar with the Hot Rod Power Tour, here is a brief description provided by (http://www.hotrod.com)

“For the 17th consecutive year, the HOT ROD Power Tour returns. This rolling tribute to the performance car is the ultimate gearhead roadtrip. With seven days in seven cities, we kickoff June 4th and spend the next week driving and bench racing through the south on our way to The Motor City.”

Each stop on this years tour saw increased traffic and enthusiasm for Edelbrock Performance Products as well as the hot rodding hobby in general.   It was great to meet so many amazing cars, new faces and to see many enthusiast from past tours as well.

We gave out a few copies of the Edelbrock book “Made in USA” and countless hats and posters. Participants were also able to register at each stop of the tour for a chance to win an Edelbrock “Top End Kit” which would be given away at the last stop to a very lucky Power Tour participant.

This years tour was also really special because we were able to raise some money for a great cause. On the final stop Edelbrock teamed up with fellow Hot Rod Power Tour fans and “long haulers” to raise over $1500 for the “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” which strives to raise awareness for breast cancer and eradicate breast cancer forever. Christi Edelbrock put it this way. “Giving back is very important to everyone here at Edelbrock and we appreciate the support and generosity of our fellow hot rodding enthusiasts and fans. Thank you for your help and continued support for such a great cause. God Bless.”

This past November something fantastic was brewing at the 2010 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Yes, the Edelbrock Supercharger kits for late model Camaro and Corvette LS2 and LS3 applications were fantastic reveals, but that’s not where we are going exactly.

At a special Press Conference, The Edelbrock Academy a newly formed program between Edelbrock and Ohio Technical College (OTC) was announced. The program will give students a solid foundation in the building and tuning of American muscle cars and performance vehicles.  As part of the course, OTC students learn about engine modifications; how to install high-performance products such as exhaust, nitrous and supercharging systems; and how to conduct dyno tuning and testing, among other skills.

The press conference outlined the details of the program but there was one more special surprise to come. Secretly and unknown to Vic, the students and faculty at OTC had begun work on a custom build of a special ‘57 Chevy Bel Air to be given to Vic. Vic was surprised and moved to say the least.

Fast forward to today… On Sunday May 1, 2011 the finished vehicle will be unveiled at the 6th Annual Rev’ved Up 4 kids Charity Car Show. This will be Vic’s first time viewing the vehicle, which is loosely based on an existing Hot Wheels toy.

OTC team members Justin and Jordan Brenner are driving the vehicle from the OTC facility in Ohio to the show here in Torrance, California. Past and present OTC students and faculty who contributed to the build are also making the journey to the show to help present the vehicle to Vic.

“The1957 Chevy Bel Air was a remarkable learning tool for our students and a great way to introduce the Edelbrock Academy and showcase the type of practical and applied training students will receive,” said Justin Brenner, director of corporate development at OTC.  “Students in our Classic Car Restoration as well as Racing and High Performance Programs have spent the past several months completely restoring the ’57 Chevy. Students dedicated their time transforming the car from a rusty shell of the past into a custom hot rod of the future. The Bel Air is infused with custom features and accessories including the new Edelbrock E-Force Supercharger making it a 600 horsepower ’57 Chevy.”

Many industry partners supported the project build by donating parts and services, including Edelbrock-LLC, Danchuk, Eckler’s, Fat Man Fabrications, Scoggin-Dickey and Summit Racing Equipment.  A special thank you also goes out to those students from OTC who made this custom build happen: Quinton Miller from Berlin, Ohio; Alex Jacin from North Randall, Ohio; and Chad O’Leary from Janesville, Wis.

The Chevy Bel Air will be driven on this years Hot Rod Power Tour, and be displayed throughout the coming year as part of OTC’s “80 high school and 20 car show tour” to promote the Edelbrock Academy to prospective students.

I was invited down to the CBS Television lot to film an interview segment for a show called “Where They Raced” (http://www.wheretheyraced.com).

“Where They Raced” is a documentary film currently in production about the history of auto racing here in Los Angeles. What made this interview special was that it was being conducted at the same location my father and his team used to race, The old Gilmore Stadium. Well, Gilmore Stadium is no longer there. CBS, The Grove shopping center, and the old LA Farmers Market currently occupy the location. And even today, like back then, it’s still a hub of Los Angeles Activity.

It was a pleasure for us to take my Fathers restored #27 Kurtis-Kraft V8-60 Midget back to the Gilmore location. You see, back in those days, Gilmore was a Blue AAA Circuit Offenhauser only track. V8-60s had never won against the more powerful “Offys.” My Father wanted to beat those cars so he worked hard at modifying his V8-60 powered car. He reworked the engine and started playing around with fuel mixtures and additives such as Nitromethane. It all paid off and history was made. My fathers #27 was the first and only V8-60 car to beat the “Offys” at Gilmore as well as one of the first vehicles in the country to use nitro as a fuel. It really was an exciting time.

It was also a pleasure to meet up with Hank Hilty, grandson of the late Earl Gilmore whose family also had such an impact in early racing here in California. Here are a few pictures from the day. Look forward to a future post when the documentary is finished!

One of the winners of the “Hot Lap Competition” will ride in the shotgun seat of Vic’s 1963 Z06 Corvette, while the other will ride in Christi’s 1966 Shelby GT 350 for a trip around the Coronado Speed Festival Track.

The Coronado Speed Festival is Fleet Week San Diego’s marquee event. The event is staged at one of racing’s most distinctive locations—Naval Air Station North Island, the only place to see live racing on an active U.S. Navy runway.
