Edelbrock was proud to be a part of NASCAR history this last weekend when Kyle Busch achieved the first Triple Crown in NASCAR history at Bristol Motor Speedway! Never before has a driver won all of the NASCAR national touring events at the same track in a single week.

It all started on Wednesday night when Kyle Busch won the Camping World Truck Series O’Reilly 200. After starting the evening at the rear of the field because of a pre-race adjustment, Kyle fought his way to the front through several caution flags to take the checkered flag. Kyle Busch Motorsports’ Toyota Tundra is powered by a Triad Racing Technologies engine mated with an Edelbrock #2879 intake manifold.

He continued his streak with his 10th Nationwide Series race victory of the year, winning Friday night’s Food City 250. This was Kyle’s 40th win in the series and tied him with Sam Ard for the most single-season victories.

Busch then proceeded to complete his history-making trifecta with a victory in Saturday’s Sprint Cup Series Irwin Tools Night Race. Kyle worked hard to fight off strong challenges by David Reutimann and Jamie McMurray in order to keep his lead. Joe Gibbs Racing relies on the Edelbrock Victor Series #2876 intake manifold to power Kyle Busch’s Toyota Camry.

Edelbrock would like to congratulate Kyle Busch in becoming the first driver ever to win all three NASCAR race events in a single week.

One of the largest street legal muscle car events of the year was held last weekend at awesome zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, NC, as the NMRA Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals and the NMCA Edelbrock Muscle Car Nationals series were featured at the 2nd Annual Nitto Tire All-Star Nationals. Despite high 90 degree temperatures this event attracted over 10,000 fans, 700 race and show competitors and 45 vendors and manufacturers on the midway.

All the cars and all the stars of the NMRA and NMCA put on a show for Charlotte area fans who came out to see the best in street legal drag racing. From wheels up NMRA Factory Stock cars to 6-second 200 mph NMCA Pro Street and Super Street cars…this event had it all. A year after the inaugural All-Star Nationals event the zMAX team had their track hook’n and cook’n with many record passes recorded by NMRA and NMCA’s competitors.

4-Wide Jet Car Monster Race:

zMAX Dragway is the country’s only 4-wide dragstrip and NMRA/NMCA took full advantage of this opportunity.

Elaine Larsen, the first lady of jet car drag racing, took on 3 other jets and showed them why her program is among the best in the USA. Over 24,000 horsepower shook zMAX Dragway as 4 jets roared 4-wide down the 1/4 mile.

Congrats to Butler Performance for their stellar runs at last weekends Pontiac Event at Norwalk in Ohio. We love to hear how well our products perform on our customers/enthusiast built cars.

Here are a few words from butler Performance…

1963 Pontiac Tempest

Just wanted to give you an update about last weekends Pontiac event at Norwalk, Ohio.

Rodney brought out his twin turbo 1963 Tempest Outlaw Promod car for it’s first 1/4 mile runs. His first full 1/4 mile pass ever was 6.42 @ 222 mph. His fourth pass was 6.27 @ 228 mph! This is by far the quickest and fastest traditional Pontiac powered drag car of all time.

We have the Edelbrock 60509’s on this car – not bad for a Performer RPM head! ( 2720 lb. raceweight ) This was in the final round of the Butler Performance sponsored heads up race at this event, which Rodney won by beating one of our engine customers, John Welter-he ran a 6.92 and also runs our CNC wideport Edelbrock heads. (we believe this was the first ever 6 second side by side competition run by traditional Pontiac powered cars). There are usually 1000+ race and show cars combined at this event and over 10,000 spectators, so a great place for us to run well. On another note, we had GREAT response at our booth for both the Victor high port head and the new D-Port Performer head (thanks to Rick R. and crew for getting it to the show on Saturday). Hope to have both castings here soon.

Dear Mr. Edelbrock,

When we were reading the play Macbeth in my 10th grade English class, I was trying to ask the student’s questions that could help them relate the play to everyday life. Students often struggle with reading Shakespeare and feeling that he is relevant to their lives. When we reached the part where Macbeth hosts the king for dinner, I asked the students what famous person they would invite to dinner. It was a brief in-class assignment so students were allowed to free write without worrying about spelling or grammar issues. If this student knew I was sending this to you he would feel horrified since he never edited it. But I knew that you would probably be touched to know that a 16-year-old student from Seekonk, MA (home of the Seekonk Speedway) dreams about meeting you. He is extremely interested in working in the automotive industry when he gets older. I am very proud of him for working hard in my honors class this year. If it wouldn’t be too much to ask I was wondering if you would be willing to send him an autographed hat and or book in recognition of his hard work and future dreams. My dad always speaks very highly of you and although we have never met, I admire you for the stories my dad has told me about your family’s hard work and dedication. Hopefully one day our paths will cross. For now, I will continue to be entertained by my dad’s stories!

Thanks,
Morgan Hellmold

What famous person would you invite to dinner? Why?

I would invite Vic Edelbrock to dinner at my house. He is the most well-known aftermarket performance group in the automotive industry. He is very pro American with all his parts made in the USA, which I support dearly. He is one of my idols and which one day I would like to join such a performance industry. I would serve him an old fashioned American barbecue with burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, etc. One question I would ask Vic would be how he went about building such an empire and of course ask for an autograph. Vic Edelbrock is one person I would invite to dinner.

Clarke Pringle will be among 900 other street rod and custom car owners heading to Victoria’s Northwest Deuce Days, which start next Friday.

The three-day event, the biggest ever held in the capital’s downtown, celebrates the 1932 Ford — affectionately known as the Deuce. It is the most copied car in history and is best known as being the basis for the high-powered jalopies of the 1940s and 1950s, which have been refined into today’s low-slung customized street rods.

For Pringle, a retired heavy equipment mechanic from Candler, North Carolina, the trip north will be his third. In 2007, he and wife Cher drove a hotrod 1927 Ford with no top through monsoon-like downpours and 40-degree temperatures on a 10,000-kilometre adventure focusing on putting their car on display on the streets and lawns of Victoria’s Inner Harbour area.

Pringle has spent the past seven years building a new street rod — a fibreglass-bodied 1932 Ford roadster with a reliable 350-cubic-inch Chevrolet motor. It has a removable hardtop and more creature comforts.

Clarke Pringle and his new ride are making the trip with up to 100 other street rod enthusiasts coming from New York State, Ontario and the Prairie provinces.

“There is no other show like Deuce Days,” he enthuses. “Victoria is just beautiful and having the cars parked around the harbour is just magic.”

Speed equipment manufacturer and hot rod legend Vic Edelbrock Jr. and his family will be sending their 110-foot yacht to anchor in Victoria’s inner harbour as they drive three cars up from California’s Bay area.

Edelbrock will be piloting a Ford flathead-powered 1932 Ford roadster, which is a replica of the car his father drove on California’s dry lakes to set speed records 70 years ago.

Vic Edelbrock Sr. was a hot rod pioneer who founded his Edelbrock Performance business by creating bolt-on engine equipment that dramatically increased horsepower.

“My father would drive his car to work all week and then go racing on the weekends after taking the fenders and windshield off to lighten the car,” Edelbrock says. The street rod-ding hobby that has exploded worldwide can be traced to these early days.

A convoy of more than 100 street rods and custom cars will be coming from California picking up others as they proceed up the coast to Victoria. Bay-area resident Pam Brocco has organized the tour, which starts at the shop of well known street rod builder Roy Brizio who is also making his third trip to Victoria.

“Sixty of the cars that will be coming up on the tour from California are customers of ours who have become friends,” Brizio says. “We have either built their cars or worked on them. This is a very special trip for us and it’s a great destination.”

Northwest Deuce Days organizer Al Clark, also an internationally-recognized street rod builder, says he had to cap the event at 900 vehicles. Many more owners wanted to register but there just isn’t any more room for the cars to be displayed. More than half the cars coming to Victoria are 1932 Fords.

Al Clark will be driving his own 1932 Ford coach with modern Chevrolet V8 power. The car was delivered new in Victoria and Clark has driven it more than 100,000 kilometres since completing the restoration and rebuild 14 years ago.

“We have registrations from Sweden, England and all over North America,” the former shipyard steel fabricator says. “Many of those coming from overseas leave their cars in California.”

Spectators are coming from as far away as Australia and New Zealand. Approximately 50,000 people attended the last show in 2007 to see the cars parked all around Victoria’s Inner Harbour, the provincial, legislature grounds, the famous Empress Hotel and Ship’s Point. The show generates millions of dollars for the local economy. Every hotel room around the harbour is fully booked.

Clark and his team of volunteers have been planning this event for the last three years with the last year being the busiest. “The people you meet at these events means a lot to me,” he says. “You can’t beat car nuts. I have met so many over the years. I have always said the cars are great, but it is the people that make it special.”

Al Clark is already looking ahead three years planning for the next Northwest Deuce Days event. “I am starting a 1932 Ford roadster for myself which will be at the next Deuce Days,” the street rod builder says.

He is spending the days leading up to the show putting the finishing touches on several street rods he is rushing to complete for customers. One area of the show will be reserved for a dozen cars that Al Clark has built.

Carteret, NJ—As they say, there is no place like home and Pat Musi proved that when he brought Frank Brandao’s 2009 Dodge Stratus—nicknamed King Kong 5—into the staging lanes at the NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, NJ. The 8-Time Pro Street champion was tackling his latest adventure, attempting to qualify for the Get Screened America Pro Mod series on the NHRA Full Throttle professional drag racing tour. It turned out that just attempting to qualify wasn’t going to be good enough for the engine builder from New Jersey. Musi would leave his home-track buzzing with excitement and with a piece of Pro Modified history by running the first nitrous-assisted 200 mph run in the 1/8-mile.

The first round of qualifying didn’t go as planned as a little tire shake produced less than stellar results. Musi did what he has done so many times before and turn to longtime friend and fellow Pro Mod racer Rickie Smith for advice. “Rickie has been helping us from the firewall on back and we made some changes to get down the track smoothly,” commented Musi. The adjustments worked and Musi cruised to an 8th qualified spot with a 5.942 at 240.89 mph. Musi was satisfied with the 865ci engine built in-house at Pat Musi Performance and he was even more thrilled with the Edelbrock EFI system. “We make the power and the 240 mph runs prove it. Those who never thought EFI could make it are probably reconsidering that right now.”

Qualifying in the top-half of the field wasn’t the only highlight; the Brandao-owned Stratus would help deliver Musi into the history books of Pro Modified racing. During that qualifying pass the car recorded a 201.58 mph performance in the 1/8-mile. That made it the first-ever Pro Mod Nitrous car to run over 200 mph in the 1/8-mile—including ADRL Pro Nitrous cars who run without minimum weight rules. Musi was at the NHRA legal weight 2,425 pounds, some 150-200 pounds heavier than other competitors who have been vying for the First 200 Mph record. It goes back to Musi’s strong position on the Edelbrock EFI system, “I think we’ve got probably the best EFI program right now. We’ve spent a lot of time on it. You know there have been some guys looking to jump onboard or they’re looking at different EFI companies, I wish them all the luck in the world but they better get drums of pistons, that’s all I can tell them. And if they think they know it, bring it on.”

Musi won his first round of professional NHRA racing by defeating Ed Hoover with a 5.935 at 241.58 mph, a new personal quickest and fastest pass. The team left Englishtown excited, including car owner Frank Brandao who has decided to leave his Jerry Bickel-built chassis in New Jersey so Musi can compete at other events. “We plan on hitting more GSA Pro Mod races and many other events before we have to return the car in October,” said Musi. To say he is grateful for Brandao’s decision to keep the Stratus in the U.S. is an understatement.

About Pat Musi

Owner of Pat Musi Performance and Pro Street/Pro Modified racer with eight championship titles credited to his name in the competitive Pro Street ranks. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pat Musi Performance. He certainly hasn’t slowed down after all these years. Two years ago Pat Musi Performance moved into a brand-new 10,000 square foot facility. The shop builds everything from stock engines for restoration projects to street performance and bracket racing engines, and of course Pro Modified/Pro Street bullets in excess of 900ci. Musi contributes to the R&D of many products for several companies, most notable Edelbrock where his name is worn on a line of cylinder heads and crate engines. He also works with the engineers at that company on nitrous oxide system development and EFI technologies. His customer, Joe Dunne, currently holds the NMCA Pro Street record with a 6.19 using a Musi 865 engine and Edelbrock EFI and Edelbrock Nitrous.

About Frank Brandao

A longtime customer of Pat Musi Performance and native Curacao resident, he first built King Kong 1 back in 1980. The Jerry Bickel-built King Kong 5 is a no-holds-barred Pro Modified effort with a double frame rail chassis and the latest nitrous-inhaling monster engine from Musi. The body is a carbon fiber replica of a Dodge Stratus. King Kong 5 continues to have a strong fan following in Curacao, where Musi drove it to the island’s quickest door-slammer pass of all-time—6.33 at 228 mph. Brandao shipped the car back the United States so Musi can enter the NHRA Pro Modified ranks at the Englishtown event. The car will remain in the U.S. for the duration of the 2010 season and Brandao will run King Kong 4 on the island of Curacao.
